We know from many years of experience that dogs are happier when they know what their owners want. Dogs want to please us and to be accepted as a part of the family.
Why Bother to Train Your Dog?
Even if you have absolutely no interest in going on to obedience competition it is essential to obedience train your dog so that your pet brings harmony rather than chaos to your home. A few of the benefits of training your dog are listed below:
- A peaceful home environment: It is much more pleasant for everyone in a home when a dog has learned basic obedience exercises such as come, sit, and stay; can be easily taught not to barge past you out of a door or gate; and will sit patiently as you answer the door. Click here for an example.
- Communicating with your pet rather than forcing or bribing with treats: People whose dogs aren't trained must often resort to force (jerks on the lead or physical manipulation) or constant reinforcement with treats to control the dog. A trained dog needs much less force - and can enjoy treats offered as treats- because you can simply tell him or her what you want. Once a dog understands what you want her to do, she will respond to your patient command without other incentives.
- A healthier, smarter dog:A well-mannered dog will probably enjoy a much more interesting and stimulating life. He will be taken on more walks because walking a well behaved dog is fun rather than work. Walks and free running are essential to a happy and well adjusted pet, but are often denied to those not fortunate enough to have mastered basic obedience.
- Ease of handling in public: It's a joy to walk a dog that isn't constantly pulling on the lead or menacing passing dogs or people. For safety's sake, it's important to have a dog trained not to jump out when you open a car door until you tell her to get out. A dog that will sit and stay by your side to be petted by people makes the experience of having him with you in public more pleasant for all involved.
- Preserving the dog's life: The most common cause of death in dogs under one year of age is euthanasia for behavioral problems. Some basic obedience training could save your dog's life by preventing or minimizing problems that might otherwise lead to him being put down or surrendered to the pound.
For both yourself and your pet it makes sense to attend obedience class. You and your dog will enjoy the benefits of effective training throughout his or her life span.
